Let’s be clear about one thing right from the start: Semester at Sea is not a cruise.

Semester at Sea is a one of a kind, multi-country study abroad program that has been a leader in the field of global education for nearly 50 years. Worldwide itineraries integrate rigorous undergraduate coursework with field assignments and service learning in as many as 12 international destinations, allowing for a study abroad experience that is truly global. Credit earned is fully transferable by the prestigious University of Virginia.

The modern, ocean-going campus of the MV Explorer has been described as one of the safest ships afloat. More than 2,000 students set sail on our living-learning campus each year, acquiring global skills, leadership, and cultural awareness—true assets in today’s rapidly globalizing society. Itinerary-specific courses, fieldwork, service projects, and interactions with host nationals form the basis of our experiential learning program, one that has been time-tested by faculty and international experts.

Since 1963, Semester at Sea has sailed on 100 voyages, educated more than 50,000 students from 1,500 institutions, and traveled to more than 60 countries. More than 97 percent of Semester at Sea alumni report their SAS voyage was the most significant experience of their college careers. And they say its value has not diminished with time. By sailing the world they became more informed global citizens, joined the Peace Corps, did grad work abroad, or launched international careers.
